Paediatric Critical Care Manual, second edition, is a useful bedside resource in the niche specialty of Paediatric Critical Care. This edition was prepared the resounding success of the 1st edition. Primarily meant for paediatric fellows and postgraduates working in paediatric ICU, this book would be equally useful for practicing pediatricians and physicians who treat sick children in their day-to-day practice.
Content has been updated to incorporate newer guidelines and concepts.
• VExUS, a newer concept in ultrasound in critical care, has been discussed in Monitoring Modalities in PICU section
• Section Cardiovascular System has undergone major changes:
o Multi-inflammatory syndrome post COVID-19 (MIS-C) included;
o Basics and troubleshooting on ECMO added;
o Recent concepts in septic shock entirely revised;
o Acyanotic and cyanotic heart diseases discussed in order to incorporate cardiac intensive care; and
o Common congenital heart diseases and the surgeries with the complications seen in the post-operative period discussed.
• A newer concept of autoimmune encephalitis is covered in Neurological System section.
• New chapters on DE resuscitation in Renal System section and acute management of inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) in Metabolic and Endocrine System section have been added.
• COVID-19 is covered under tropical infections in PICU in Infectious Diseases section.
• Sickle cell disease in PICU and Cytokine storm syndrome (CSS) in PICU have been added in Haematology and Transplant Medicine section.
• Newer poisoning such as recreational drug use and overdose and Paraquat and Diquat poisoning are added in Poisoning and Toxicology section.
• An entire section on the important evidence-based articles that have changed our practice has been added thus helping fellows understand the importance of translational medicine.
• Updated PIM Score and PELOD Score are given in the Appendices section.
This book has the potential to give confidence and competence to any physician taking care of critically ill children, as well as the postgraduates and fellows planning to take the exit-level examinations on their way to expertise in this field.
